Perhaps you have been employed for a long period of time by a company in Wales, and are now thinking about taking the jump into running your own business? So, you need a new website designed.
Alternatively, you might be an established business here in Wales, which has been trading for a long period of time, yet has never got about to having a website designed for your business?
What is the sure is that more businesses than ever are investing in having a high-quality website built by Walsh- this is so that they can improve their businesses online marketing.
However, sometimes finding a web designer, and then knowing how to convey what you want as a business, can sometimes be difficult for some business owners.
Sure, there’s a million and one things to think about- however, as we’ve been building websites in Wales for a very long time, we thought we are in a good place to write this rather quick article, which will help provide you with some food for thought, in terms of things you need to think about prior to contacting a web design agency.
What we would say before we start is this, every business is different, as such your website needs to reflect that, in terms of overall design and functionality. Yet, this article is aimed at giving you a flavour of some of things you may wish to think about, before getting on the dog and bone (phone) to your web design agency.
We would say one of the worst things you can do, is to shop around various web design agencies purely on the basis that you are looking for the lowest price. That’s not a good idea we think, at all.
Sure, there’s some things in business that you can save money on, like buying cheap or used office furniture for example, yet do you really want to scrimp and save your company website?
We say that because sometimes you customers will only know about your business via your website, so if their company website is looking a bit cheap and well lets face it, looks rather naff, then this could be off-putting to new business.
Plus, think about this for a second, some businesses come to us, and say they want a cheap website built, because most of their marketing budgets going to be spent on online advertising, well, this is kind of a doomed marketing strategy we think.
That’s because, you may drive a million shoppers to your website, via digital marketing, but if your website is rubbish, in terms of design and functionality, then the whole process is a waste of time, as you might be losing customers, due to having a low quality website.
Sure, there’s no point in really pushing the boat out straightaway, and splashing tons of your marketing budget on your new website, but you do need to find a happy medium.
You do need a website that functions as your customers expect, plus has a good design, you can leave improving the design to a point it blows your customers socks off, when the business is bit more established and you have a higher marketing budget to work with.
We therefore recommend thinking about exactly what you want your new company website to do in terms of its functionality, for example do you want to have the feature to chat to customers via the website while they are shopping on your website?
Do you want a mobile version of the website designed?
Do you want contact forms on every page?
It’s this planning that will really help your web design companies in Cardiff to have a really good idea of what you want and to arrive at a quote.
Weigh up the competition
Now, if you are about to launch a business, or you’ve been running one for quite a while in Wales, then you likely to know who the market leaders are.
Now, this may simply mean that they may have incorporated features into the design of their website, which give them a bit of the edge over some of the competition? For example, like having an AMP version of their website or simply a better design, by allowing products to be sorted more easily, or to sort products by whether they are in stock.
Now, this might sound rather basic, yet if you don’t stipulate to your web developer, that you want the functionality that tells a customer, this item is in stock or not, then it may not be included in the quote. Which means, at the end, when you’ve worked out all the features you do need, and paid the web designer to do this work, well, sometimes the web design quote may have sky-rocketed- so the name of the game is to be very clear with what you want.
It doesn’t matter if you are opening a new solicitors practice, a chain of new restaurants or perhaps you are planning on retailing thousands of different items online, a website is going to need text to be written.
For us in digital marketing, we refer to this as being the “content marketing” and you do need to work out whether your going to be writing this, and sending it to the web developers, or whether the work is going to be written by the agencies copy writers.
So, it doesn’t matter if your having a one-page WordPress site built, to advertise a new live rock music concert in Cardiff, or your going to hire a PHP web designer to build a one-thousand page site, you do need to make sure, who’s writing all of that text, as otherwise, it could slow down the web design process, if its not written on time. Plus, you need to make sure, is it included in the quote or not?
As if its not, and thousands of product descriptions needs to be written, well, that’s one whole lot of work that needs to be done, so again, its really important that whichever web design business you hire, you just need to make sure, that you as the business, state exactly what you want, so that everyone knows, who’s doing what, such as whether the design company is writing the text, or the client is.
So it’s important to think about content, in terms of who is going to be writing the text, will it be you the business owner or the agencies own copywriters?
Then you need to think about photos, will the web design agency be providing these? Or do you need to go and hire your own photographer?
There is so much to think about, yet here at Walsh Digital Marketing we aim to make things simple as possible.
